Folders and subfolders

  • Section File Allocation Table (FAT) and Root folder (Root) described structure of the root folder in FAT32 file system that contains file information: names, attributes, and some other.

A root folder may contain records corresponding to subfolders. A root folder together with subfolders form a folder tree of the file system.

FAT represents a subfolder almost the same as a usual file described by a parent folder record, and consists of a set of the same folder elements, as a root folder.

The very first element of a subfolder is a self-reference under «.» pseudonym. This reference provides a number of the first cluster of the given folder. It is followed by an element referring to the parent folder under «..» pseudonym. This reference allows to find the beginning of the parent folder. At that cluster with zero number specifies the root folder.
